FROG HOPPERS
Aphrophoridae
'Cuckoo spit', 'spittlebugs'

The early stages, nymphs, of these bugs surround themselves with a mass of foam (left) for protection. At this stage. nymphs of most species (right) look very much like any other.
Like aphids, they suck sap out of plants: the excess fluid is used to form the 'spit'.
