DIPTERA

Flies

A large and varied order - many families are extremely difficult to identify to species level. This page will only provide pictures of some families as they become available.

Phoridae Scuttleflies. Amongst the smallest of flies.  These are parasitic on various other insects. Right: the pupae of Phalacrotophora fasciata a parasitoid of ladybirds.  The mother injects eggs into the host larva; the eggs hatch and their larvae emerge from the host pupa, rapidly pupating themselves.
Tipulidae Craneflies or daddy-long-legs
Syrphidae Hoverflies.  This family is probably the most amenable to identification. An on-line recording scheme has started recently.
