DELPHI

The temple of Apollo was the centre point of the classical site although older mystical  traditions exist - these are mainly to the east and south of the classical site. The theatre and the Helladic race track are well preserved but most of the buildings are ruined and nature, as this fig, has long had a foothold ....

Much of the sacred spring is now enclosed and it's certainly not possible to purify oneself in it .... The scenery - under Mount Parnassus - is spectacular and this is typical of the Greek holy sites. They are part of the land, not imposed on it.

Wildlife is well represented in the exhibits of the new museum. The crow giving wise advice. And the python, source of the secret knowledge?  The site also harbours plenty of living animals including dung beetles, ants and cicadas  (far right).
