White Bryony

Bryonia dioica Jacq.

This is the only native British member of the Family Cucurbitaceae but other members of the family are familiar in the kitchen: melons, marrows, cucumbers and so forth. It is poisonous although not to the Bryony ladybird.

The plant is vine-like, crawling
over bushes and other
vegetation - holding itself
erect by means of tendrils.
The flowers, like the fruit
are white.

It is not related to Black Bryony, Tamus communis L., which is a member of the yam family, Dioscoreaceae. This is even more poisonous.
